MTVE Integrates Chainlink VRF on BSC Mainnet, Bringing Provably Random Game Mechanics to the Metaverse

Given the recent launch of Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) mainnet, MTVE is excited to announce our live integration of Chainlink VRF. Chainlink VRF is one of the many decentralized services available through Chainlink’s industry-leading oracle network, providing developers with a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness directly on-chain to augment their smart contract applications in exciting, unpredictable, and provably fair ways.

As the go-to Random Number Generator (RNG) solution throughout the MTVE Metaverse, Chainlink VRF enables a wide range of in-game functions, starting with randomly assigning properties to ships and fairly determining the content of blind boxes (loot boxes). We selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by Chainlink’s time-tested oracle infrastructure, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that verify the integrity of each random number supplied to MTVE. Now, every gamer in the MTVE Metaverse has a fair and unbiased opportunity at receiving certain rare and potentially high-value ships, planets, and/or attributes, ultimately creating more competitive and transparent gameplay.

Powering the Metaverse With Provable Randomness

MTVE is a blockchain-based, open-world, AAA science-fiction game that leverages key features from both decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to create an immersive, user-controlled gaming experience. In the Metaverse, gamers can control their own planet while having access to over 350+ spaceships that they can use to roam space and battle with hostile parties. Gamers can also design their own worlds and spaceships, with their designs represented as NFTs and permanently saved on the BSC blockchain. Through NFTs, gamers have complete control over their in-game items, leading to a censorship-resistant environment for users to freely trade their items with one another.

To create a meaningful and equitable MTVE Metaverse, we required a source of randomness. Randomness is key to generating unpredictability and fairly distributing in-game items, both of which enhance the gaming experience. However, accessing randomness on-chain is not straightforward, as several security considerations need to be taken into account in order to avoid manipulation and questions of gameplay integrity. For instance, some blockchain-based RNG solutions like block hashes are exploitable by blockchain miners who can delay publishing transactions in blocks as a means of achieving more favorable outcomes. On the other end, off-chain RNG solutions like traditional data providers are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof in the process being fully tamper-proof.

After reviewing various options, we identified Chainlink VRF as providing the most secure and verifiable RNG solution for smart contracts, avoiding the issues described above. On a technical level, Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the VRF request is initiated with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has valid cryptographic proof, and the smart contract will only generate the cryptographic proof if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that each action in the MTVE Metaverse relying on Chainlink VRF for randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the MTVE team.
